Pennsylvania Convention Center Back on Track

Tuesday July 15, 2003
After a year of negotiations with the six labor unions that work in the Pennsylvania Convention Center during which numerous convention bookings were lost to other cities, an agreement has finally been struck which should bring peace between labor and management.

The new agreement on work rules will not only open the door to more conventions visiting the city, but also make way for the planned $500 million expansion of the convention facility.

All, however, is not totally resolved in terms of the funding for the expansion. A proposal to fund a portion of the construction from the proceeds of slot machines to be located elsewhere in the city faces opposition in the State Senate.

Marcia Gelbart of the Philadelphia Inquirer has written a detailed article in today's paper entitled "Center's six unions agree to work rules."
