Is the Jimmy lost forever?

Sunday August 17, 2003
Jimmies or sprinkles? In my mind it was no question. Spinkle is what happens when it is just raining a little bit. I've never called those tiny little chocolate pieces or tasteless multi-colored bits "spinkles." In my world (and apparently in most of the Delaware Valley) those have always been "jimmies."

I thought that the term was universal, but in reading today's Philadelphia Inquirer, I not only learned that we're probably the only place in the world where they're called "jimmies," but also that the term is slowly but surely disappearing with the younger generation.

I also had no idea of the origin of the name "jimmies," or that both they and the term originated just to the north in Bethlehem, PA.

I think you'll enjoy this story in today's Philadelphia Inquirer entitled, "The beloved jimmy could be lost."

The phrase is misunderstood by many except true fans, when I order jimmies dont ask chocolate or rainbow. Jimmies are jimmies (chocolate), sprinkles are colored pieces of candies. No confusion should exist.
