LPGA Golf Returns to the Greater Philadelphia / South Jersey Area
The LPGA returns to the Greater Philadelphia / South Jersey area this week and next with two tournaments, the McDonald's LPGA Championship and the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Actions kicks off this week with the McDonald's LPGA Championship at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware where Annika Sorenstam will defend her 2003 victory in the second major tournament of the LPGA season.
The top players in women's' golf along with numerous members of the LPGA Hall of Fame will participate in this four day tournament which, last year, raised $2 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities and other children’s charities, bringing the tournament’s 23-year total of monies raised for children’s charities to $40 million.
For those who have attended in tournament in past years, it is important to note that parking will not be available at the Brandywine Town Center off of Naamans Road. Parking will be available, instead, at Merchant's Square on Route 13 off of I-495. Weekend parking will also be available at the Barley Mill Plaza off of Rt. 141 North. (Parking directions and map)
Next week the action moves to the South Jersey Shore where the ShopRite LPGA Classic will take place at Bay Course at the Seaview Marriott Resort and Spa in Galloway Township, NJ. 2004 will mark the 19th year of this popular and prestigious event that attracts the greatest female golfers in the world. This is a three round tournament with championship rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday June 18-20.
In 2003, Angela Stanford led wire to wire en route to her first-ever LPGA victory. Her 54-hole total of 65-67-65 – 197, 16 under par, was just one shy of the tournament record 17 under par set by Annika Sorenstam in 1998. In 2002, Sorenstam captured her second ShopRite Classic title with a 54-hole total of 12-under-par 201. (Parking directions)
