Comcast Passes the Test - At Least Today

Tuesday August 12, 2008
Comcast and I have for years had a love/hate relationship. I love the fact that I'm able to get high-speed Internet access but I hate the way it goes down so often.

Needless to say, I need the Internet for my job, so when my Internet speed had slowed progressively over the past month, my displeasure with Comcast rose to new heights. "Call Comcast," my wife kept telling me. "They'll come out and tell me everything's just fine," I'd reply.

Finally last Saturday, I'd had enough. With speeds slowed than my 56k dial-up backup, I called Comcast and spoke to an Indian chap on the phone. Do you ever wonder if these customer service people are actually in India? Anyway, he confirmed that my signal was lousy and made an appointment for a technician to come out today. "Not until Tuesday?" I asked. Apparently quick service is still a problem.

The service technician arrived around noon today and within minutes concluded that my modem was shot. Apparently the old RCA modems tend to die after a couple of years. A few minutes later and a new modem connected, I was back to fast, if not blazing speeds. I'm getting 1.6 Mbps now which is much better, but not nearly the 16 Mbps that Comcast advertises in their ads and literature. I wonder who gets the 16 Mbps speed?

At least I can do my work and videos and audio stream once again. The technician even changed out my outside splitter without me asking. Apparently they suffer ill effects from weather, mostly rain.

Anyway, I'm back to feeling pretty good about Comcast and their service. They're not perfect, but as long as they remain the only game in town other than DSL, I'll live with them.

What are your feelings about Comcast? Tell me your good experiences and your bad in our comments section.

I have had Comcast for 6 years

My speeds are always fast unless a major storm rolls through and wipes out the neighborhood

Been through one modem and a cut line outside

HD, OnDemand, HSI all work great and I am sorry your area sucks so bad

1.5 mb is very questionable

I wonder what is up with your infrastructure locally or your pc

I have friends that game online with Comcast and they never have that slow of speeds

is it 1.5 down or up?
