Eagles Beat the Seahawks to Stand 5-3 at the Season's Halfway Mark
Monday November 3, 2008
Maybe the Eagles were still in a daze like the rest of us here in the Philadelphia area, but they sure didn't look good for the first quarter of yesterday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Donovan McNabb looked terrible and the defense got blown away by a ninety-yard touchdown pass on Seattle's first play from scrimmage.
Luckily, however, that was Seattle's only real offensive showing of the day and McNabb finally came out of his personal stupor to lead the Eagles to a 26-7 whipping of the Seahawks in a game that the Eagles simply had to win. For them to have any chance for a playoff run they had to beat a bad Seahawks team. Mission accomplished.
It's the next four weeks that will show us if the Eagles are contenders. Next Sunday they host the New York football Giants in a prime time game that the nation will be watching. If they can beat the Giants, they'll be just a game behind the division leaders. A loss will leave them three games back with only seven to play - too deep a hole.
Following the Giants it's two games on the road against weak AFC opponents, the 1-8 Bengals and the surprising 5-3 Ravens. The Eagles should beat both teams. Then it's home for a Thanksgiving night game against the Arizona Cardinals who finally look like a team that might make the playoffs.
For the Eagles to have any post-season hopes they will need to do 3-1 in the next four games. That will leave them 8-4 at the corner post heading down the homestretch with three of their final four games against their division opponents.
The Eagles aren't as good a team as we have came to expect several years ago. They're not Super Bowl contenders. The final half of the 2008 season, however, will show if they're a team on the upswing or a team that's ripe for a tear-down.
