A Fool's Gold Standard
Sunday November 23, 2008
Remember how Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has said that the Eagles are the gold standard of the NFL? Let's make that fool's gold. The Eagles lost 36-7 to the Baltimore Ravens and with it said goodbye to any chances for any postseason play. The loss left the Eagles 5-5-1 on the season.
For all of those who have been calling for the beginning of the Kevin Kolb era, you may have seen it today; and it looked frightening. Even more frightening was Andy Reid's decision to bench Donovan McNabb in a game where the Eagles were trailing only by the score of 10-7 at halftime. McNabb was having a terrible game, but he was the only hope that the Eagles had to pull out a win.
It wasn't just the Kolb looked bad. He looked really bad. Part of that blame rests squarely with the coaching staff. Whether it was Andy Reid or Marty Morningweg who called for the pass play when it was second and inches from the goal line with the Eagles scoring 22-7, the play call was the type that gets coaches fired and in this case, the firing should take place immediately.
McNabb and Kolb combined for a quarterback rating of 11.8 (with two minutes left in the game). Now that Reid has benched McNabb, it seems likely that Kolb will be the quarterback for the rest of the season. That's scary news for anyone who hopes to see another Eagles win this season, but probably what is necessary in order to see if Kolb has any chance to be the Eagles quarterback of the future. It's likely the end of the Donovan McNabb era in Philadelphia.
If last week's tie against Cincinnati was ugly, I have no idea what to call this week's performance. It was disgraceful.
