Unbelievable! Eagles Crush Cowboys 44-6 and Advance to NFC Playoffs

Sunday December 28, 2008
Unbelievable. I admit that I thought that the Eagles' season was over last week when they lost in that horrendous showing against the Washington Redskins. I knew, of course, that they were still technically alive. They needed a miracle to even get to the point where today's game against the Cowboys meant anything.

Tampa Bay had to lose to Oakland. No way would that happen. Either Minnesota or Chicago would have to lose. That seemed somewhat more likely.

Well, miracles do happen. Oakland not only beat, but actually dominated Tampa Bay and Chicago lost to Houston. What that meant was that today's game against the hated Dallas Cowboys was all or nothing. The winner would go to the playoffs and the loser would go home.

What no one could have predicted was what happened when the Eagles played the Cowboys today at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles crushed... no totally destroyed the Cowboys. It was a total domination, led by the Eagles defense. In consecutive third quarter drives the Eagles defense scored when Dallas looked like they were driving for a touchdown to get back into the game.

Who led the defense? Brian Dawkins caused both third quarter turnovers. That's the same Brian Dawkins that many, earlier this season, were saying was near the end of his career only to see him make his seventh Pro-Bowl. Dawkins is a free agent after this season and the Eagles need to make sure to keep him in the flock.

If you ignore last week's loss to Washington, the Eagles have been the most dominant team in the NFL since Thanksgiving. That bodes well for the chances that they can go to Minnesota next week and beat the Vikings who struggled down the stretch to make the playoffs. Should the Eagles, somehow, manage to beat the Vikings, it will mean a rematch in the Meadowlands against the New York Giants whom the Eagles crushed just a few weeks ago.

It suddenly looks like the Eagles will be a team to watch in the postseason.
