M. Night Shyamalan's Next Filming Location? Not Philadelphia.
Philly's favorite (and by “favorite,” I mean “only”) major filmmaker, M. Night Shyamalan, has decided to film his newest project, Devil, in Canada because of the current Pennsylvania budget impasse. Carrie Rickey reported on August 25 in the Inquirer that:
Though the filmmaker has shot eight of his nine features in the Philadelphia region - for an estimated economic impact of $375 million, according to the local film office - his backers couldn't wait any longer for legislators to approve the incentive that brings filmmaking and jobs to the state.
Yikes. Philadelphia isn't the most bustling metropolis when it comes to filmmaking, but we could always trust M. Night to give us some love. He even filmed his most of The Last Airbender, his forthcoming costume-and-special-effects-heavy adaptation of a Nickelodeon cartoon, here.
At least when a door is closed, a window is opened -– even if that window is tiny in comparison. The School Reform Commission voted earlier this month to allow the reality show “Teach” to shoot in Northeast High. The A&E show will feature Tony Danza –- who has a BA in history education –- as educator. It might not provide nearly as many jobs or as much cash to Philly, but we still have a little bit of the limelight.

For many reasons, I hope he doesn’t make a habit of this, and comes back.
I’m an actor and it’s the Governors as well as our State House who have failed us. While they take their summer vacation M Night takes his film to Canada because our elected officials could not see the projected loss to the state is over 300 million dollars. We also lost another film I can’t mention here due to these same issues.
I would ask that all concerned citizens from the caterers, wardrobe, makeup artist, casting directors, grips, actors, and crew stand up and be heard and tell your elected officials that we want our jobs back! FYI. Filmmaker and Producer, Kevin Hooks, is another of Philadelphia’s prized talents – and he’s been around for a quite some time.
