Beginning at 7:30 tonight, September 20, a ground-breaking 3-D art installation is taking over skies above the Ben Franklin Parkway. 24 powerful, robotic searchlights have been placed along a half-mile section of the Parkway. They will create larger than life light formations in the night sky. "Open Air" will run every night from September 20 to October 14 from 8-11 p.m. But tonight's Opening ceremony will feature Rahzel of the Roots who will control the lights with the sound of his voice (he can rap, sing and beatbox at the same time). There will be food trucks and a "meet the artist" reception. Mexican/Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was commissioned to design this light installation in conjunction with the Philadelphia Live Arts Fest and the Design Philadelphia Festival. It's a beautiful September night to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
