Philadelphia International Children's Festival

Celebrating its 20th anniversary as the oldest and one of the largest festivals of its kind, the International Children's Festival will welcome artists from around the world to perform more than 50 shows, designed especially for young audiences. The Children's Festival gives youths a chance to see, touch and feel ancient and modern, multicultural art forms. This year's festival has been extended to a full week and is expecting 20,000 children and their families.

Some of the festivals highlights include:

WXPN'S "Kids Corner" LIVE with Kathy O'Connell
April 27, 2004, 7 p.m.
This year's live broadcast will be like the old-fashioned radio shows with actors, musicians and lots' of fun thrown in! Following the show, kids can meet Kathy in person.

Stars of the Peking Acrobats
April 25 - May 1, 2004
Zellerbach Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
Young audiences will be wowed by this dazzling, high-energy show featuring eye-popping acrobatic displays, brilliant costumes, and even a touch of Chinese comedy.

Cirque and Company presents JAMIE ADKINS IN TYPO
April 27 - May 1, 2004
Zellerbach Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
Typo’s a fast paced show that grabs kids’ attention with amazing juggling, unicycling, and bumbling slapstick all performed to a magical musical score by a live musician.

Gansango Music & Dance presents KALETA: A CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
April 25 - May 1, 2004
Harold Prince Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
In the West African country of Benin, a young boy dreams of a beautiful Kaleta'a Halloween-like festival in which children dress as lions, zebras, and other animals and go door to door to entertain their neighbors.

The Jabali Acrobats
April 25 - May 1, 2004

This incredible Kenyan troupe combines African and Chinese traditions of acrobatics to create a fast-pace show that blends limbo (with fire), tumbling, jumping, dancing and amazing intricate balances.

BAM - The Blue Barrel Show
April 25 - May 1, 2004
Iron Gate Theatre
The Blue Barrel Show electrifies the crowd with its powerful rhythms and deliriously funny sketches - it’s like Stomp for kids! From side-splitting comedy to savage drumming where everyday objects like 50 gallon oil drums and colanders are transformed into a percussion orchestra.

JACK-FIVE-OH: A Folk Tale Odyssey
April 25 - May 1, 2004
Iron Gate Theatre
Set in the mythical Hundred Tongues Hotel, this wonderfully funny and entertaining play uses songs, shadow puppets, costumes, special effects and giant heads to bring authentic Newfoundland fairy tales to life.

Mark Jaster: A Fool Named ‘O’
April 25 - May 1, 2004
Studio Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
Audiences are in for for a joyous romp of tricks including a seemingly impossible dive through a small wooden hoop and an astounding illusion of stairs, escalators and elevators.

StageWorks
April 25 - May 1, 2004
The Outdoor Plaza of Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
The StageWorks program features established and emerging regional performing artists, jugglers, storytellers and musicians.

PlayWorks
April 25 - May 1, 2004
The Outdoor Plaza of Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
International artisans work with children to create simplified versions of crafts such as African drums, Hmong tapestry, Pazanki egg painting, Native American dream catchers, and Peruvian sundials.

Wynton Marsalis Concert
April 25, 2004, 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m

Grammy-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis brings his music to the Children’s Festival. Tickets for this event are $38-$54.
