In the four neighboring counties of South Jersey, relatively few voters choose to register as Democrats or Republicans. There are 196,775 registered Democrats, 120,145 registered Republicans and a majority of 402,245 who choose to remain unaffiliated.
Across the entire region, there are 1,043,189 registered Republicans, 1,173,467 registered Democrats and 625,086 who elect to remain unaffiliated or belong to other parties.
All in all, the Greater Philadelphia - South Jersey metropolitan area has an almost equal number of Republicans and Democrats and a sizeable number of swing voters who decide the outcome of most statewide or nationwide elections.
