The Greater Philadelphia - South Jersey metropolitan area consists of five counties in southeastern Pennsylvania - Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia, and four counties in Southern New Jersey - Burlington,Camden, Gloucester and Salem.

The metropolitan area's population (US Census 2001) is 5,116,830 which represented a growth of .3% from the estimated 1995 figure. The Greater Philadelphia / South Jersey metropolitan area is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States, ranking behind New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

The population of the City of Philadelphia proper is 1,491,812. The next five largest cities/towns in the region are Camden NJ (84,844), Cherry Hill, NJ (69,319), Levittown, PA (55,362), Chester, PA (40,660) and Willingboro, NJ (36,291).

The Greater Philadelphia - South Jersey metropolitan area totals 3,855 square miles in area. The City/County of Philadelphia is 135 square miles, making it the smallest county in the region geographically, but the largest in population.

The sizes of the other Pennsylvania metropolitan counties are Bucks (607 sq.miles), Chester (756 sq.miles), Delaware (184 sq. miles), and Montgomery (483 sq. miles). The sizes of the metropolitan counties in New Jersey are Burlington (805 sq. miles), Camden (222 sq.miles), Gloucester (325 sq. miles) and Salem (338 sq. miles).
