Treat Yourself to a Scary Halloween

Lots of Great Ways to be Scared Silly in Philly

Spending Halloween in Philadelphia is a real treat. Dress as your favorite goblin, grab a "ghoul-friend" and paint pumpkins with the Count at Sesame Place or get an insider's view of Eastern State Penitentiary. It might be tricky to choose just one of these scary Halloween activities.

Ghoulish Happenings

Ghost Tour of Philadelphia: Take a candlelight walking tour of America's most historic and most haunted city. The tour through Old City begins at 5th & Chestnut streets and guides tour participants through the historic neighborhood. The tour is offered at 7:30 p.m. every evening in October plus at 9:30 pm Oct 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 and 30 and November 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 2005. Visitors can purchase tickets at CremaLita ice cream shop, 401A Chestnut Street (between 4th & 5th Streets next to Omni Hotel) until tour time or at the Independence Visitor Center, 6th & Market Streets, until 5:00 p.m. www.ghosttour.com/Philadelphia.htm

Eastern State Penitentiary: Watch for the "not-so-friendly" ghosts of Al Capone and Willie Sutton during Halloween tours of the dark, crumbling cellblocks of this former prison. Theatrical lighting, sound and special effects, lasers and high-tech, three-dimensional elements add to the horror of this tour, available through October 31, 2005. Reservations strongly recommend for Halloween tours as tickets often sell out. Several area restaurants offer tour/dinner packages. 2124 Fairmount Avenue, (215) 236-3300. www.easternstate.org

Hedgerow Theatre: Their annual Halloween Party is also a fundraiser for Hedgerow Theatre. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 with pre-show treats, a performance of The Hound of The Baskervilles at 8 p.m., intermission treats and prizes for patrons wearing the Funniest, Most Creative, Best Couple, Scariest and Best Sherlock Holmes costumes. $30.
64 Rose Valley Road, Rose Valley, (610) 565-4211. www.hedgerowtheatre.org

Brandywine River Museum: Dance the night away at the "All Hallows Eve Costume Ball" on October 22, 2005. Located in the museum's "haunted" courtyard, the event features live music, a costume competition and food and beverages. U.S. Route 1 & Route 100, Chadds Ford, (610) 388-8315. www.brandywinemuseum.org

The Philadelphia Orchestra: The Orchestra musicians come dressed in their most frightful best and so should you at their annual Halloween concert on October 31, 2005. Prizes are awarded for best audience costumes. A masquerade party follows the concert from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM in Commonwealth Plaza of the Kimmel Center. The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 260 S. Broad Street. (215) 893-1900. www.philorch.org
