The AFL is recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues. It is also America's fastest growing sport. In addition to the three expansion teams for the 2004 season, at least two more teams will be added in each of the next two seasons.
The AFL is celebrating its second season on NBC television in 2004. WNJC Radio (1360 AM) will broadcast all Soul regular season games and post-season games. WNJC will also carry expanded pre-game and post-game shows. In addition, fans will also have an opportunity to hear Soul games on the Internet at www.wnjc1360.com since all games will be simulcast on the web.
The Philadelphia Soul ownership features rock-n-roll icons Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, as well as local real estate developer Craig A. Spencer. Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski will serve as team president. Head coach Mike Trigg is a proven AFL winner, garnering an ArenaBowl championship with the Grand Rapids Rampage.
"The AFL is exciting to me as a fan and an owner," said Jon Bon Jovi. "We're bringing action-packed football to fans in Philadelphia, a huge sports town. What I find so appealing about the AFL is the focus on the love of the game and our goal to provide solid sports and entertainment that's fun, affordable and family-friendly. Plus, with the visibility of the sport on NBC, the Philadelphia Soul and the league as a whole have the potential to really grow."
Arena Football differs from NFL Football in many ways, not the least of which is that it is played indoors on a field that is just half as long as a standard NFL field. Instead of eleven players the AFL features eight players on the field. Teams carry a 20-man active roster and a four-man inactive roster. Players play both offense and defense with the exception of the kicker, quarterback, offensive specialist (the kick returner on defense) and two defensive specialists. Substitutions are limited.
As in the NFL, four downs are allowed to advance the ball ten yards for a first down, or to score, however, there is no punting if a first down is not made. While a touchdown scores six points, there are numerous other scoring options in Arena Football.
The ALF has an excellent feature entitled, Rules of Arena Football and the Basics of the Game which is a must read for all new AFL fans.
In addition we have prepared a Guide to the Philadelphia Soul and the Arena Football League which contains numerous useful links to help you in your appreciation and understanding of this exciting new addition to the Philadelphia sports scene.
