The Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon 2003 and Rothman Institute 8K Race will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23, and will be once again run through the historic and scenic streets of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Mayor John Street said, "Building on the success of last year, the Philadelphia Marathon will again carry the name Citizens Bank. We welcome the interest and great support of Citizens Bank, which is becoming a favorite with marathon runners nationwide."

The Mayor said, "This is the 10th anniversary of the Philadelphia Marathon. In 2002, over 9,000 runners from States throughout the nation, and several foreign countries participated in the Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon and 8K Race. The Marathon is now an important part of Philadelphia's great sports and running traditions."

Prize money is as follows (male and female in each category). The first place money for the male and female winners of the Marathon is $3,500 each. The second place money is $2,000; and $1,000 for third place. The first place masters male and female is $1,000. The first place male and female winners in the 8K is $1,000; second place winners, $500; and third place winners, $250. The first place masters male and female is $250. The first Philadelphian will be awarded $500 (must be a resident of Philadelphia County).

Sponsors for Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon include the City of Philadelphia, Office of the City Representative, Fairmount Park Commission, Recreation Department, Rothman Institute at Jefferson, Verizon Wireless, Wissahickon Mountain Spring Water, Gatorade, Channel 6 ABC, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon begins and ends at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The new times for the Marathon are 8 A.M. and the Rothman Institute 8K begins at 8:30 A.M. Due to the increase in runners for Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon, there are changes to the course. Changes: Runners will no longer run a loop on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. They will run from Arch Street to 6th St., 6th St. to Race St., Race St. to Columbus Blvd., Columbus Blvd to Washington Ave., Washington Ave. to Front St., and will be back on course Front St. to South St. Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon route will now take runners past the Philadelphia Museum of Art, City Hall, Chinatown, Independence Hall, National Constitution Center, Old Swedes' Gloria Dei Church, Old City/Penn's Landing, South Street, Mother Bethel Church, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Philadelphia Zoo, Fairmount Park, Memorial Hall, West River Drive, Kelly Drive, Boathouse Row and Manayunk.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three men and women in both the Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon and Rothman Institute 8K Race. Both events have been designated official Pennsylvania State Championship Races.

In conjunction with the Citizens Bank Philadelphia Marathon, a two-day Health and Fitness Expo will be held at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, 42nd St. and Parkside Ave., on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. A special pasta dinner will be held at the host hotel, the Wyndham Philadelphia at Franklin Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 22. Entry fee for the Marathon is $45 before Nov. 1; $50 until Nov. 17 (on line registration closes 6 P.M. Nov. 17) and $60 at the Expo. No registration or packet pick-up for the Marathon on Race Day. Entry Free is $15 for the 8K through Nov. 1. After Nov. 1, registration for 8K is $20. At the Expo and on Race Day, the $20 fee remains the same. U. S. dollars only. No refunds.
