John Fischer's Philadelphia
Vol. 1 - Number 8 - 06/11/99
Another week is just about done. It seems that we have finally broken the heat spell and that we can now look forward to what is going to be another great weekend with excellent weather.
There's lots going on in the next ten days and that's nothing compared to the fun at the end of the month when the Sunoco Welcome America Celebration kicks off.
There are two big events this weekend at Penn's Landing. In what, quite frankly, occurs to me to be a strange paring of events, Saturday will find the Islamic Heritage Festival from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is is part of the PECO Energy Multicultural Series. The festival features arts & crafts, multicultural exhibits, traditional fare, lectures by prominent international and nationally known Islamic scholars and an open market bazaar with merchants selling a variety of items indigenous to the culture.
Sunday Penn's Landing hosts Diversity of Pride from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The gay and lesbian community come together to offer a unique day of color, humor, music and excitement. Over 60 community groups and organizations will serve up varied cuisine, sell homemade wearables, peddle unique handicrafts and present stage entertainment. There is an admission charge.
The 1999 Mellon Jazz Festival kicks off today and runs through next weekend. The headline concert is next Saturday night the 19th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and features Lou Rawls, 1999 festival honorees Kevin and Robin Eubanks and the Mellon Ensemble for Unity. The concert is at Penn's Landing and the news is it's FREE! You can check the full schedule of events for the festival.
Also looking ahead to next week, SportsFest '99 come to the Pennsylvania Convention Center from June 17-20. Billed as the "world's largest sports collectible and entertainment festival", this year's event features a reunion of 1980 Phillies stars on Saturday, June 19. In attendance will be Steve Carlton, Greg Gross, Greg Luzinski, Tug McGraw, Dickie Noles, Pete Rose, and Mike Schmidt. For more information you can check the SportsFest '99 Website.
