John Fischer's Philadelphia
Vol. 1 - Number 9 - 06/14/99

Well, the weather Gods sure played tricks on us this weekend. So much for nice weather, although things did pick up a bit late Sunday afternoon.

Maybe I should have been a weatherman. I think it's the only job in the world that you can have, be wrong about half the time and still keep your job.

Speaking of weather, Philly chat was really busy on Saturday night. We had visits from our good friend Wendy Hogan, our Kids Exchange Guide, from Ontario, Canada. Wendy was telling us it has been really hot and muggy up there in Ontario for weeks. It was also great to speak with Billy from Wisconsin who was telling us about the Shania Twain concert he attended recently in Kansas City.

Slow popped in from Snyder, Texas and really had a real tale to tell. Slow is a regular reade,r having been born and raised in the Tacony area, until he met a girl from Texas who stole his heart. He now works the oil fields down in Western Texas. His town was from the worst drought in since the 20's until just recently when the rain began. What used to be an 8 foot wide stream through the middle of Snyder is now a 200 foot wide river. No one can enter or leave this town of 12,000.

I guess that we should be grateful for the wonderful weather we have had since late May. As most of us can see from looking at our lawns, however, the rain that is forecast for this week is greatly needed.

As voting continues for the baseball All-Star Game, let's take a look at some interesting stats:

In the vote for catcher let's look at the Phillies Mike Lieberthal compared to the Met's Mike Piazza. Mike Lieberthal is batting .340 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs and 48 runs batted in. Mike Piazza is batting .326 with 10 doubles, 12 home runs and 38 runs batted in.

Piazza is running away with the voting, in large part due to his New York and Los Angeles connections, and a few "Gras"-routes voters in Philadelphia, but who really deserves to be on the All-Star team? You tell 'em, Sam!

The big surprise so far for the Phillies is that is the team were chosen today, Paul Byrd with his 9-2 record and .199 opponents batting average, would definitely deserve the nod over Curt Schilling who had his second poor outing in a row yesterday to see his record drop to 8-4.

Well, that's my spin on things. Let me hear from you.You can join me in our chat room almost every evening - Philly Chat - or drop me a note at philadelphia.guide@about.com.
