John Fischer's Philadelphia
Vol. 1 - Number 12 - 06/21/99
Another great Saturday in the Philadelphia area. How lucky have we been this spring, even if Sunday was a washout? Yes, all of what we have experienced until today has been spring. Today is the first day of summer! Happy summer to all of you.
My wife and I had a great time on Saturday at the big, free concert at Penn's Landing featuring the Mellon Jazz Ensemble for Unity, the Kevin Eubanks Band featuring Robin Eubanks, and the headline performer, Mr. Lou Rawls. Be sure to check out our feature on the Mellon Jazz Festival Concert at Penn's Landing.
Some of the most fun at any event in Philly is people watching. It seems like the really big thing nowadays is that if you are bald on top you have to let the hair in the back grow really long. I mean really long. We saw quite a few folks with that look. I guess there's a reason why we can't see ourselves from the back.
I saw one fellow on Saturday that really reminded my of that USGA commercial that they have been running all through the US Open where the guy appears at dawn to golf and the course starter tells him that he cannot play in his pajamas.
The lady in front of us at the concert had a hospital bracelet on her left wrist. Was she on some kind of temporary leave from a hospital? She kinda made me nervous.
Is it just me or is it true that almost everywhere I go in a crowd there is always some person who feels the personal need to organize everyone around him/her. We saw just such a person on Saturday. Now, my wife, Eileen, would tell you that organization is not necessarily a bad thing per se. Maybe if I were a bit more organized I would actually remember to take out the trash and deal with the numerous other things I keep promising to do.
OK, well, I admit, I am a big people watcher, but it's fun, isn't it?
The LPGA Tour comes to the Philadelphia area this week for their third major tournament of the year, the McDonalds LPGA Championship. Since we do not yet have a Wilmington, Delaware Guide, I'm taking this opportunity to mention the tournament here.
The tournament is held at the DuPont County Club which is located off of Route 202, north of Wilmington. Parking is available at the Brandywine Town Center and at the New Castle County Airport. For those coming from the Philadelphia area, the best place to park is at Brandywine. Just follow I-95 South to Exit 11. Follow Rt. 92 West (Naaman's Road) to Rt 202 North. Turn right onto Rt. 202 North. The parking entrance is 1/8 mile on the right.
This is your opportunity to see the top female golfers in the world compete in a major championship. I'll be there several days this week. I'm the guy with the About.com golf shirt following the top female golfer in the world, Sweden's Annika Sorenstam. The championship begins Thursday and runs through next Sunday. There are practice rounds Monday and Tuesday and a pro-Am on Wednesday.
Well, that's my spin on things. Let me hear from you.You can join me in our chat room almost every evening - Philly Chat - or drop me a note at philadelphia.guide@about.com.
