John Fischer's Philadelphia
Vol. 1 - Number 14 - 06/25/99

What a busy week for me, having just spent my third full day at the LPGA Championship near Wilmington, Delaware. I was even able to scoop the Golf Channel today. Noting the Annika Sorenstam's husband was caddying for her, rather than her long time caddie Colin Cann, I asked what was up. Annika's husband advised me that she had fired her caddie but would give further details. Well, on the behind the last green I passed the word onto the reporter for the Golf Channel, so maybe we'll learn the full story now.

In fact, the full story is now available from the Associated Press, but three hours after we broke the news here.

It's a busy weekend ahead the area. The golf tournament continues at the DuPont County Club through Sunday. You can expect to see huge crowds over the weekend.

Penn's Landing on Saturday and Sunday plays host to the annual Irish Heritage Festival, which runs each day from noon till 10:00 p.m., rain or shine. Local Irish band Blackthorn, a favorite of WIP Morning Show host Angelo Cataldi, will perform at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and I believe Saturday also. There will be lots of crafts exhibits, Irish food and lot's of great music.

The Welcome America! Celebration kicks off today. The big events of the weekend include the Marian Anderson Award concert and film festival tonight, honoring Gregory Peck, and the big Arts Procession ad Marian Anderson Award Ceremony tomorrow. Also tomorrow and Sunday is the Manayunk Arts Festival running both days from 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Sunday finds the Native American Ceremony and Celebration in Olde City. Be sure to check our article on Welcome America! 1999 for more details.

Also running today through Sunday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center is the Mobile 1999 National African American Cultural Expo, an event which promotes "cultural pride, unity and empowerment". The expo features prominent black authors reading from their works, art, a black inventions museum. children's area, collectibles, health pavilion, historical exhibits, living legends such as the Tuskegee Airman, and famous Negro League baseball players, performing arts, seminars, a technology pavilion and a "Soul Food Cafe".

One of the highlights of the expo promises to the Duke Ellington Tribute on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., featuring the Ellington Millennium Orchestra.

So, you have lots of choices of things to do this weekend, so get out of the house and go do something!
