Another weekend has arrived and we'll be back in the sauna as another heatwave rolls in and the drought continues. If you looking for information on drought conditions and things you can and can't do during the drought emergency, check out our current feature on the drought and our page of net links of drought information.
There's lots to do this weekend if you don't mind the heat and humidity. The KYW Crafts and Fine Arts Festival rolls into Penn's landing beginning this evening with a performance by the Opera Company of Philadelphia at 8:00 p.m. The festival itself runs from noon to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The festival features artists of all types selling their work.
It also features Peter Nero and the Boston Pops in concert at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow playing music from such Hollywood films as Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Fireworks will be held following the concert at approximately 9:15 p.m.
It's all at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street and it's free!
The first place Atlanta Braves come into town to face the Phillies in a four game series at the Vet beginning with a doubleheader tonight in which ace Curt Schilling will be pitching the first game. Unfortunately, the time of this series is not the best for the Phillies who are likely to be without two of their biggest bats for much of the series. Mike Lieberthal is tending to a sore elbow and Scott Rolen's back was injured in a game in Milwaukee on Wednesday. Both may be back by Sunday. In fact Schilling has also been treating for shoulder tenderness, so many will be watching his performance carefully.
With 7 of their next 11 games against the first place Braves, the Phillies can ill afford to have their bats go silent and their ace's arm go south.
If you have young children, why not consider a visit to the Blueberry Blast at the Camden Children's Garden at the New Jersey State Aquarium. There are events scheduled like a scavenger hunt, painting with blueberries and a blueberry eating contest.
The Camden Children's Garden and New Jersey State Aquarium are located on the riverfront in Camden.
If you'd like to take a drive and then find your way over to the Delaware or Maryland shores, check out the Delaware State Fair which opens this afternoon and runs through next Saturday. The fair is being held on Route 13 in Harrington, Delaware. It is open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. tomorrow through next Saturday.
There's a midway, livestock exhibitions, and even a rodeo. The fair has entertainment each evening at the grandstand.
Where's Harrington you ask? Take I-95 south to Route 13 south. You may wish to use the bypass around Smyrna and Dover. Continue further south on Route 13 until you reach Harrington.
Well, that's just a few of the things on tap for this weekend. Keep cool and have fun.
