How to register to vote

Citizens have the right and the duty to vote in local, state, and national elections. However, they must first be registered in their home county.

Difficulty Level: easy      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:
  1. You must be a U.S. citizen and resident of both Pennsylvania and your election district at least one month before the next election.
  2. You must be 18 years of age by election day - you do not have to be 18 to register to vote.
  3. You have not been confined to a penal institution for the conviction of a felony within the past five years.
  4. Download a National Mail Voter Registration Form from the FEC and mail it to 520 N. Delaware Avenue, 5th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
  5. Register in person at your county registration office - in Philadelphia on the fifth floor of Riverview Place at 520 N. Delaware Ave. (at Spring Garden Street), or in Room 142 City Hall.
  6. You may also register to vote when applying for or renewing a motor vehicle driver's license or in state welfare offices, vocational rehabilitation offices and armed services locations.
  7. You can also obtain a mail application form from your county registration office or at your neighborhood post office, library or state liquor store.
  8. However you obtain the form, be sure to complete the application in full and mail it to the county registration office.
  9. You should re-register if you have moved, changed your name or have failed to vote since before 1992.
  10. You should also re-register if you encountered a mix-up in your registration records at the last election and needed a court order to vote.
Tips:
  1. Be sure to register 30 days or more before the next election.
  2. Once you register be sure to exercise your right to vote.
  3. Study the platforms of all candidates to make sure that your vote is meaningful.
