As the delegates and press travel on I-95 from the First Union Center to Center City, they will surely be less than impressed by the shell of the building that for years has towered over the highway near Exit 16 - Washington Avenue near the Riverview Shopping Center.

Front Street at Penn's Landing

Areas around Penn's Landing feature broken fences, torn up sidewalks and lots of trash.

Chestnut Street between Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell has been torn up for months.

Foglietta Plaza

Foglietta Plaza near the Society Hill Sheraton is strewn will liter and graffiti. Conventioneers out for a walk will not be happy if the encounter the numerous "Sidewalk Closed" signs that currently block many of the sidewalks in the historic district.

Spring will arrive in about six weeks and it is clear that a big push will be needed to spruce things up before the summer. Former Mayor Ed Rendell made great strides in promoting the city and drawing the Republican Convention, OpSail 2000 as well as other Millennium 2000 events. The city now needs to make sure that those who come to visit will leave with a positive impression.
