At the recommendation of President Bill Clinton, the full Democratic National Committee is expected on Saturday to confirm Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell as the new general chairman of the DNC.

Rendell's second term as mayor of Philadelphia ends in January 2000, and speculation has been rampant for months about his future. Even with this appointment, many expect that Rendell will be a leading candidate for governor of Pennsylvania in 2002.

Rendell vaulted into the national spotlight when, in November of 1998, it was announced that the Republican Party would bring their 2000 Convention to Philadelphia. It was the leadership of Rendell along with top local Republicans that captured what Rendell likened to the "crown jewel of conventions".

In large part, however, it was Rendell's success as mayor that paved the way for the choice of Philadelphia and set him apart from other politicians as one who can work well with members of all parties to reach a common goal. Under his leadership Philadelphia has become an example of how a city in decline can be given a new birth.

Rendell has worked with City Council to balance the budget, reduce taxes, and hammer out tough but fair contracts with the city's multiple unions. During his administration construction of new hotels, restaurants and new sports facilities have flourished. Philadelphia has once again become a desired tourist destination for many.

It is this ability to build concensus, work with those of differing views while still keeping a positive outlook that makes Rendell the perfect choice for general chairman of the DNC. In his first news conference Rendell pledged to stress what the Democratic Party has to offer rather than attack the opposition. "Forget partisanship and negativity....Republicans aren't bad people."

For an excellent book about Ed Rendell and his tenure as Mayor of Philadelphia, I highly recommend A Prayer for the City written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger. You can order the book directly from Borders.com using the link provided.
