Philadelphia Area November Events

Dateline: 10/30/99

The holiday season is upon us. Halloween is followed within four short weeks by Thanksgiving with Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Years Day 2000 shortly thereafter.

We'll take a look at some of the major events in the area in November. If a website is available with more information we'll give you a link to explore. If you know of any additional events that we should add to our calendar please drop me a note. Be sure to include any available website information as well.

Art and Museums

Ongoing - Philadelphia Art World Calendar contains an excellent capsule of major art exhibitions in the area.

Ongoing - The Franklin Institute has an exciting series of events planned in 1999 to celebrate its 175th anniversary. The new permanent exhibit, Franklin, He's Electric, opened in March. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend and continuing through the holiday season, (November 26 through December 31), a spectacular moving light show choreographed to music will accent the architectural features of the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial and provide holiday entertainment to the public. The Franklin Institute Holiday Celebration of Lights, an annual new tradition, will entertain and educate all visitors.

Ongoing - The Independence Seaport Museum features more than 20 interactive exhibits and audio-visual games throughout the galleries, Admiral Dewey's 1898 flagship at the Battle of the Manila Bay, OLYMPIA, and a WWII submarine, the BECUNA, a wooden boat shop, changing exhibition galleries and nautical gift shop.

Ongoing - While your at Penn's Landing be sure to take the RiverLink Ferry and visit the NJ State Aquarium and Children's Garden, right across the river.

Ongoing - The Academy of Natural Sciences features Beakman's World On Tour which will run through January 2, 2000.  Check out the Academy's full schedule of events.

Ongoing - The Philadelphia Museum of Art features exciting exhibits including The Kingdoms of Edward Hicks, Worldly Goods: The Arts of Early Pennsylvania, 1680-1758 both of which will run through January 2, 2000. 

Music, Shows and Theater

Ongoing - The Pennsylvania Ballet has begun its 1999-2000 season. Everyone's favorite, The Nutcracker, will run from December 4 -31, 1999 at the Academy of Music. Get your tickets well in advance.

Ongoing - The Philadelphia Orchestra is in its centenary 1999-2000 Season, with big events in store to celebrate the orchestra's 100th anniversary. Make your plans for events in November and December now.

Ongoing - What's Playing in Philadelphia compiled by Roberta M. Stack, the House Dean of Hamilton College House at the University of Pennsylvania, is an excellent and comprehensive listing of theatrical performances in the city.

Special Events

through the holidays - Lights of Liberty is extended and continues its initial run at Independence National Park. A multi-media presentation running nightly. Reservations are strongly advised.

ongoing -  Longwood Gardens on US Route 1 in Kennett Square has a full schedule of November events including the annual Chrysanthemum Festival celebrating Japan with the artistry and beauty of Japan recreated throughout Longwood's Conservatory and outdoor gardens.

November 5 -7 - The 5th Annual Pennsylvania Holiday Show comes to the Ft. Washington Expo Center with a large collection of holiday decorations, crafts, entertainment, food and gifts.

November 12 -14 - The 14th Annual Philadelphia Art Expo '99 comes to the Apollo of Temple. This is the nation's largest African American Art Expo featuring the art of Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Andrew Turner, Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews, Betty Saar, Charles Bibbs, Paul Goodnight, James Denmark, William Tolliver and more.

November 26 - RiverRink opens its 1999-2000 season at Penn's Landing.

Sports

ongoing - The Philadelphia Eagles have won two of their first seven games and are home against division opponent Washington on November 14 and Indianapolis on November 21.

ongoing - The Philadelphia Flyers finally reached the .500 mark by the last weekend in October and have a busy home schedule in November. Be sure to check out their new website.

ongoing - The Philadelphia 76ers kick off their 1999-2000 season with three road games at San Antonio, Phoenix and the L.A. Clippers but return home on Monday, November 8 for their home opener against Seattle.
