Blue Cross River Rink Begins 5th Season

The Blue Cross RiverRink opened for its fifth season with a grand anniversary celebration on November 27, 1998. Festivities kicked off at noon with a Musical Revue presented by Sesame Place featuring many of the Sesame Street characters that remain popular with each new generation of children.

This was followed at 12:30 p.m. with the ribbon cutting ceremony presided over by Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell. This was followed immediately with the opening skating session of the season. A good crowd was on hand to celebrate the opening.

At 1:30 p.m. there was a break in the action to resurface the ice and have the official fifth anniversary celebration with RiverRink mascot "Rinky". Free Tastykake was distributed to all. Throughout the afternoon there was free entertainment for children and adults alike.

The afternoon of skating and entertainment was followed by a huge fireworks display at 5:55 p.m. which was features on all local newscasts. Holiday festivities are scheduled from now through January 3, 1999, including a special Skate with Santa on December 19th and 20th and a New Year's Eve Skate Party and fireworks on December 31, 1998.

RiverRink will remain open now through February 28, 1999. There are skating sessions throughout the day and evening. RiverRink offers Birthday Parties, Skating Lessons, Corporate Parties and Private Rentals. Special rates are available for groups of 15 or more.

The Blue Cross RiverRink is located at Penn's Landing at the foot of the Chestnut Street pedestrian bridge. The are detailed directions available on-line.
