Overview
The Italian Market in Philadelphia is one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in the United States. It remains one of the best places in the city to find great food in a unique setting. It spans about 9th Street in the Bella Vista neighborhood of South Philadelphia. The center of the action is between Christian Street and Washington Avenue, with additional shops as far north as Fitzwater Street and as far south as Wharton Street. Shop and restaurant hours vary, but most are closed on Mondays.
History
The Italian Market dates back more than a century. An influx of Italian immigrants began to arrive in Philadelphia around the 1800s and the market developed to cater to the new community. It has been bustling ever since, and many of the vendors and shops have remained the same, with the oldest shops dating as far back as the first decade of the 1900s.
Market Today
The Italian Market is a living, breathing historic site. It offers a glimpse into a time before supermarkets, when eating was a community effort. The numerous stalls and shops include fish, meat, and cheese shops, cafes, and household wares. Though parts of it are dilapidated and the street is often in dire need of a good cleaning, it holds all the delicacies of Italy. You'll find perfect prosciutto, juicy mozzarella, succulent olives, and fresh bread, pasta, and produce in Philadelphia. The area continues to attract immigrants of many origins, and a significant number of Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Mexican business owners have set up shop alongside the Italian shops, thus enriching the culinary and cultural experience for everyone.
Culture
Locals, tourists, and gourmands alike enjoy exploring the market and sampling the unique goodies while taking in the authentic atmosphere. While you stroll in and out of cheese shops, take a minute to notice the giant mural of Frank Rizzo, the polarizing 1970s Philadelphia mayor whose likeness occupies a wall at 9th and Montrose Streets. You may also recall Rocky Balboa's famous jog down this street in the movie Rocky.</p>
Festival
Don't miss the annual Italian Market Festival on the second weekend in May every year. The street comes alive with outdoor food, music and a carnival-like atmosphere.
