Founded in 1899, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is dedicated to the education of students in medicine, health and behavioral sciences. The College fosters the growth of the osteopathic profession by training physicians through programs of study guided by osteopathic medical tradition, concept and practice.
The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is located on 17 park-like acres on City Line Avenue near the Schuylkill Expressway, 15 minutes from the historic area of Philadelphia and close to Philadelphia's prestigious Main Line.
The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine offers programs and courses in: AIDS, drug/alcohol abuse, family medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, pediatrics, rural medicine and women's health.
The first two years present basic sciences integrated with clinical disciplines. Medical ethics, law, and public health orient students to their social responsibilities as physicians. The final two years emphasize clinical experiences in a unique training network that comprises 30 affiliated hospitals, five community health care centers and scores of physician's offices.
In 2004, the entering D.O. Class of 2007 consisted of 254 first-time students from 136 different colleges and 27 states. The average class GPA was 3.38, the science GPA was 3.45 and the mean MCAT score was 24. Students averaged 24 years of age; 56 percent are women and 20 percent are under-represented minorities.
The college has 1047 medical students as well as graduate-level students in several other fields of health care. It is one of the largest medical schools in the United States and the largest civilian producer of U.S. military physicians.
There are 60 full-time and 47 part-time members of the faculty.
The student to faculty ratio is 10:1.
