The PCO was founded in 1919, as the first non-profit, independent college of optometry and in 1923 the first to confer doctor of optometry degree. The college remains a a leader in both training and research.
The Elkins Park Campus of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry is located on 11 acres of land in Cheltenham Township, and is three miles from The Eye Institute, the College's "clinical classroom" located in West Oak Lane.
The College awards eight earned degrees. The Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) and Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degrees are awarded to all students who have successfully completed the professional curriculum.
Candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree must have successfully completed the first year of the Doctor of Optometry program and have accumulated a minimum of 128 semester hour credits, including at least 18 semester hour credits in the Humanities, English, or Social Sciences.
The College offers a Master of Science in Low Vision Rehabilitation, a Master of Science in Orientation and Mobility Therapy, a Master of Science in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (formerly Rehabilitation Teaching), and a Master of Education in Education of Children and Youth with Visual and Multiple Impairments. These programs are also available on the Certificate level. A Master of Science in Clinical Optometry is also offered to international ophthalmic practitioners.
