Overview:

Princeton is the fourth-oldest university in the U.S. and is one of the eight Ivy League universities. Originally founded at Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1746 as "the College of New Jersey," it relocated to Princeton in 1756 and was renamed "Princeton University" in 1896.

Princeton is an independent, coeducational, nondenominational institution that provides undergraduate and graduate instruction.

Location:

The campus now occupies 500 acres in Princeton, a town of approximately 30,000 residents that is situated about an hour's train ride south of New York City and an hour's train ride north of Philadelphia.

Academics:

Undergraduate students may choose a concentration from among 34 departments in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. They graduate with either the A.B. degree or the B.S.E. degree. Interdisciplinary certificate programs offer students a wealth of opportunities for focused study that supplements the primary work of the concentration.

The most popular undergratuate majors are: History; Economics; Public policy analysis; English language and literature; and Political science and government.

The Graduate School offers advanced degrees spanning the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering.

Princeton is a residential campus where housing is guaranteed for all undergraduates for four years.
