Folks in the Greater Philadelphia / South Jersey area love their Chinese food and there are plenty of great Chinese restaurants to choose from.

We've selected ten of our favorite restaurants with an eye towards selecting not only restaurants in Philadelphia's Chinatown, but by including five restaurants in other areas of the region.

We've including several expensive restaurants with a varied cuisine as well as several smaller, inexpensive, strictly Chinese restaurants. These are presented in alphabetical order.

1. Buddakan

325 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, PA
215-574-9440

Olde City

Perhaps Stephen Starr's greatest restaurant. The cuisine is modern Asian and the white décor is stunning. The dining room is dominated by a 10-foot Buddha. Executive Chef Scott Swiderski and his team create an exceptional, modern Asian cuisine prepared with French technique and spectacular presentation. The inventive menu incorporates the ethnic flavors of Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Indian cuisines. Lunch and dinner are both expensive.

4. Happy Wok

607 S. Chester Road
Swarthmore, PA 19081
610-338-0882

Delaware County

Unless you live in the Wallingford/Swarthmore area, you've never heard of Happy Wok. The students at Swarthmore College surely have. as have I since I live nearby. Located in Swarthmore Pizza's old small location this is strictly a take-out or home delivery restaurant. The small four tables are mostly used by customers waiting for take-out. The food and service are the big things here. Both are excellent. You catch watch your meal cooked right before your eyes. Delivery and take out are available.

5. Imperial Inn

146 N. 10th St.
Philadelphia, PA
215-627-5588

Chinatown

I've eaten here many times, because it's close to the PA Convention Center. I've had some great Chinese food here and, sadly, once the worst. Most surveys continue to rate the Imperial Inn very high and give especially good marks to their dim sum and Mandarin selections. As recently as April 2007 my group of five had a great lunch. My bad experience two years ago involved pork that tasted bad and was very gristly. Lunch specials are $6-$8. Dinner entrees range from $7 - $17. Delivery and take-out are available.

6. Joy Tsin Lau

1026 Race St.
Philadelphia, PA
215-592-7226

Chinatown

My favorite restaurant in Chinatown for atmosphere, you really feel that you're eating in Hong Kong or Beijing. The décor is lovely. It is also the concensus choice for best dim sum in Philadelphia. The selection is huge and the food is not only delicious but beautifully prepared. There seems to be no end to the soup cart, fry cart, steam cart, dessert cart and more. They also offer an extensive standard Cantonese and Mandarin menu. Lunch specials are $5-8. Full dinner entrees range from $10-28. House special dinner $15.

Despite its small size (about 40 seats plus private banquet room located in the back with a private entrance), Lee How Fook has one of the most loyal customer bases in Chinatown. It's a popular spot for family celebrations and business lunches. Lee How Fook feature authenic Cantonese dishes that are prepared fresh with every order. Lee How Fook is a BYOB restaurant. 10. Sang Kee Peking Duck House

238 N. Ninth St.
Philadelphia, PA

Chinatown

My favorite restaurant in Chinatown. It's well worth the walk to the northeast edge of Chinatown near the Vine Street Expressway. The restaurant is small and busy but the food is superb and well worth the wait. The prices are extremely reasonable. You'll find lots of Chinatown residents eating here which is always a good sign.
