Summer is in full effect. There’s no holiday that makes me more proud to be Philadelphian than Independence Day when we all remember that this city was the Nation’s original capital. We start the celebration here early with fireworks, festivals and outdoor movie screenings. Here are some of the best June Events.

Philadelphia’s free monthly art event gets even better as the months get warmer. Most galleries can be found between Front and Third, and Market and Vine Streets.
The Philadelphia International Bike Race
When: June 3, 2012
Where: Manayunk
Cyclist from allover the world come to Manayunk to race the grueling hills. Spectators spill out of BBQs and house parties to watch.

Philadelphia is recognized as one of the top beer producing and selling cities. Philadelphians love craft beer; they consume more Belgian beer than Belgians do. There will be hundreds of festivals, dinners, tour, pub-crawls and tastings throughout Greater Philadelphia.

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing
This annual festival features a diverse list of artists. This years day time concert features Kid Cudi, Major Lazer, Tune-Yards, Wale and of course, Philadelphia native’s, the Legendary Roots Crew.

The annual Odunde Festival brings Africa to South Street. The Festival begins with a procession on Schuylkill River where prayers and blessing are bestowed and continues to upper South Street for a street festival featuring live music and African inspired food and crafts.

InLiquid’s Art for the Cash Poor is an annual block party art sale. Local artist exhibit their pieces and allow collectors add to their collections without breaking the bank. There will be live music, food and booze.
First Person Arts Stripped Stories

The Story Slam makes its debut at Union Transfer with Stripped Stories, a sex themed storytelling show, that promises to be sexy, embarrassing and hilarious. Special guest, Elna Baker, of The Moth, and This American Life will host.

This two-hour tasting will feature some of the best local chefs and restaurants will be serving up their most impressive bites to compete for the honor of being crowned the best of the chefs by attendees. Proceeds will benefit WHYY.
Wawa Welcome America When: June 25 – July 4, 2012
Where: Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Philadelphia begins its countdown to the mega celebration on July 4th. The Wawa Welcome America Festival will feature two spectacular fireworks display, free entertainment and great food and history. Outdoor movies, The Great Gatsby, Ferris Bueller’s Day off and Rocky will air at locations around the city.
