For naturalists, FDR Park offers a rare opportunity in South Philadelphia to view native trees and plants, and numerous species of birds.

Native trees that are prevalent throughout the park include choke cherry, sweet gum, pin oak, swamp white oak, American sycamore and black willow. Native shrubs include button bush, silky dogwood, elderberry, rose mallow and winterberry.

FDR Park was once a large wetland marsh and much of that habitat survives within the park. Pied-billed grebes, coots, ducks, and geese are easily seen as well as numerous species of songbirds and marshbirds. If your lucky you may even see an egret or blue heron.
