One Book, One Philadelphia, is a program that encourages Philadelphia residents to read one extraordinary book each year. It also hosts events related to that book's themes. This year's book is Create Dangerously, by Edwidge Danticat. See the full list of events on the Free Library's website.
The Philadelphia International Auto Show
When: January 28 - February 5, 2012
Where: The Pennsylvania Convention Center
Philly's auto show is known as one of the best in the country with over 700 new vehicles showcased. Car lovers come from far and wide to check out the wheels at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
First Friday
When: February 3, 2012
Where: Old City; other locations city-wide
Art shops and galleries open their doors to the public. Some offer appetizers, wine and entertainment, and best of all, it's all free. The bulk of the action is centered in Old City but additional neighborhoods sometimes host art openings and events as well.
Wing Bowl 20
When: February 3, 2012
Where: Wells Fargo Center
Watch as competitors eat all the chicken wings it is humanly possible to eat in Philadelphia's annual eating contest and one the city's most popular annual events. The overall winner takes home $20,000 and the local winner gets a new car. This event draws a surprisingly wide audience.
When: February 4, 6-7 p.m. and every Saturday through June 16th
Where: Kimmel Center's Commonwealth Plaza
This free event features music across a variety of genres from dance troupes to vocalists to jazz ensembles. Enjoy happy hour specials from Woldgang Puck and drink discounts from the PECO and Annex bars.
20th Annual African-American Children's Book Fair
When: February, 12, 2012
Where: Community College of Philadelphia
This events caters to preschoolers through young adults and features a book fair, prizes, games and more. More than 20 accomplished African-American children's authors and illustrators will be in attendance.
The Victorian Celebration of Death
When: February 18, 2012
Where: The Laurel Hill Cemetery
Learn about the Victorian customs surrounding death during this unique tour. It is just one of Laurel Hill Cemetery's many tours that explore various aspects of death and burial traditions in this one-a-kind cemetery overlooking the Schuylkill River.
Washington's Birthday Celebration
When: February 20, 2012
Where: Valley Forge National Historic Park
George Washington's birthday is celebrated in style, with cake, Colonial music and lots of activities for children. There is no better place to pay homage to Washington than at Valley Forge, where his army spent a critical winter gearing up to go on to win the Revolutionary War. The Boy Scouts will also celebrate their 100th year at Valley Forge.
