Things To Do in Philadelpia in January

Begin 2013 with the Mummers Parade and enjoy great events throughout the month. The Philadelphia Auto Show, the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival and Philadelphia Restaurant week are just a handful of notable events in January.

The Mummers Parade: This parade is one of the longest running traditions in the US. There's no better want to ring in the New Year than with the Mummer's. Enjoy the elaborate costumes, choreographed dances and music from Washington Ave to City Hall. After they they head down to "Two Street," (2nd Street) where things kind of digress.

Sake and the Collection at the Barnes Foundation: Get and introduction to Sake, the oft misunderstood Japanese spirit while viewing arguably the best collection of fine art in Philadelphia. John Gatti, instructor of art and aeshetics with pair sake with masterworks that complement their flavors and scents.

Locals Only at AIGA Philadelphia SPACE: A new show at AIGA: A new show at AIGA, the American Institue of Graphic Arts focus on local designers working in Neon.

First Friday: Check out gallery openings throughout Philly, particularly in Old City.

Spring Garden Indoor Antique & Vintage Flea Market: You don't have to travel out of the city to find great flea markets. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday threw March there will be more than 50 vendors selling antiques, collectibles, vintage furniture and jewelry at this location.

Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival's Documentaries & Dialogs Series: Five film screenings to highlight the best of Jewish Documentary cinema from the UK, Israel, Austria, Germany and the United States will be shown. There will be additional events in conjunction with the screenings such as pre-film shorts, a vodka tasting and a performance from the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre.

The Philadelphia International Auto Show: Recognized by the industry as one of the top shows in the country, the Convention Center will display more than 700 of the finest specimens in the Auto Industry.

MLK Day of Service: It's not a day off, it's a day on. In the spirit of Martin Luther King Philadelphians gather to work on community service projects that help improve our city. Last January over 100,000 volunteers pitched in. Check the website for more information on how you can get involved.

First Person Arts Story Slam: Amateur story tellers get their 5 minutes of fame at these monthly events. Tell a five-minute, true first person story over drinks. This month's theme: Free.

Philadelphia Restaurant Week: This is an excellent opportunity to try some of the best restaurants in Philly on the cheap. Participating restaurants offer three-course lunch for $20 or three-course dinner for $35 dollars.
