Choosing Accommodations in Philadelphia

Hotels and Other Options for Staying in Philly

By , About.com Guide

Philadelphia is home to a wide range of accommodations offering many options for visitors to the city. In addition to all the standard chain hotels you can expect to find in any major city, Philadelphia has independent and boutique hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and youth hostels. Whether you’re working with an unlimited expense account or can barely scrape together change for a cheesesteak, there is a place for you to stay in Philadelphia.

And remember that at least as important in deciding what type of place you want to stay is choosing what neighborhood to stay in when visiting Philadelphia.

The bulk of hotels are located in Center City. This is convenient considering this is where most visitors spend the majority of their time. You won’t be more than a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from most of the major sights, dining, and nightlife if you stay anywhere in Center City.

If money is no object, stay at one of Philadelphia’s world-class hotels: The Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, The Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, or the Rittenhouse Hotel.

Newer additions to the old, classic Philadelphia hotels include the Palomar, Le Méridien, and the Independent. Each offers various amenities but all bring a modern, fresh option.

Budget travelers have two very affordable options. The Apple Hostel in the heart of Old City and Chamounix Mansion hostel in Fairmount Park both offer dorm-style accommodations with a limited number of semi-private rooms. Another budget option for anyone affiliated with any of the local universities is to stay at the International House in University City, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania and located just off campus. This is especially convenient for anyone studying or working at either the University of Pennsylvania or Drexel University.

In the mid-range of price, there are a wide range of chain and independent hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and rooms in private homes. Many of the chain hotels are located in unique, historic buildings, so even they offer more character than their names (ex. Best Western) might suggest.

It is wise to reserve a room well in advance to get the best deals. This is especially true when visiting at peak times, especially during summer, festivals and holidays. Independence Day is a huge event in Philadelphia, so if you plan to be here for the festivities, which last an entire week or longer, you are well advised to book as far in advance as possible.

Most hotels offer parking at a daily cost on-site or in a nearby lot, usually for around $20 a day. The Official Visitor Site for Greater Philadelphia is an excellent resource for finding descriptions, reservations, and discounts, including the Philly Overnight Hotel Package which includes hotel accommodations for two night, free parking, and a gift and coupon book upon check-in.

Bed and Breakfast Connections of Philadelphia has additional offerings if you’re looking for something cozy and unique. And at least as important in deciding what type of place you want to stay is choosing what neighborhood to stay in when visiting Philadelphia.
