Mt. Airy is a neighborhood in the Northwest corner of Philadelphia. Mount airy is divided from Center City Philadelphia by Kelly Drive. It is a mostly residential neighborhood, situated next to Wissahickon park the neighborhood is especially wooded for a metropolitan area. The neighborhood was named for a mansion built in 1750 by William Allen, a wealthy merchant, attorney and Chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania. Much of Mt. Airy was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century. The area is comprised of many large gray stone Victorian homes on tree lined streets. The area is recognized for being one of the first successfully integrated neighborhoods in America. Mount Airy residents tend to be liberal.

Mt. Airy is in the Northwest corner of Philadelphia. It is flanked by Manayunk, Germantown and Chestnut Hill. Mt. Airy stretches from Cresheim Valley Road to Wissahickon Gorge to Washington Lane to Stenton Avenue. It is roughly 10 miles from Center City Philadelphia.

Getting There:

From Center City it is accessible from West River Drive and Lincoln Drive and from 676 West. It is served by the R8 line of the Regional Rail.


Education:

Mt. Airy has a large number of public and private lower and high schools. Public schools in Elanor C. Emlen School, Charles W. Henry School and the Anna L. Lingelbach School. Private Schools include the William Penn Charter School, Chestnut Hill Academy, Springside School and Germantown Friend School. Universities close to Mt. Airy include Arcadia, St. Joseph's and La Salle.


Things To Do/ Atrractions:

Being within Wissahickon park Mt. Airy has some of the most beautiful outdoor areas in Philadelphia. The neighborhood many hiking trails, natural parks and creek and recreation centers. Carpenters Woods has plenty of walking trails and a dog park. The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts was started in Mt. Airy by a former circus performer. The large sunny studio holds classes for trapeze, aerials, juggling, unicycling, tight wire and tumbling. Kitchen's Lane is a mansion lined hill leading to a beautiful stretch of Fairmount Park. The Park includes steep bike and hiking trails, view of the Wissahickon. Nearby there is a recreational park with tennis courts, a baseball field and playground. The closest movie theaters are in Manayunk, Plymouth Meeting and Bala Cynwd. Crossing McCallum Street into Chestnut Hill, an indoor skating rink that is popular on weekends for teenagers.


Dining:

While Mt. Airy doesn't have a high number of restaurants it's neighbors Manayunk and Chestnut Hill have plenty. Main Street of Manayunk has excellent restaurants, retail stores and cafes as does Germantown Avenue through Germantown and Chestnut Hill. Mt. Airy is famous for it's food cooperative Weaver's Way. This members only grocery store specializes in whole foods and community development. Some notable Mt. Airy restaurants include the Goat Hollow, Tiffin, Umbia and the Highpoint Cafe. The neighborhoods culinary scene continues to develop.
