Named for Banjamin Franklin, Philadelphia's most renowned citizen, the Parkway is a unique achievement in city planning. This imposing diagonal boulevard links the City of Philadelphia with the greenery of Fairmount Park.

The monumental avenue, begun in 1917, is the culmination of plans by Eli Kirk Price II, a member of the Fairmount Park Commission, and later Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Among the architects represented are Paul Cret, Wilson Eyre and Jacques Greber.

The completion of a diagonal artery was a major deviation from William Penn's grand plan for the city. Eakins Oval and the three intercepting fountains along the Parkway provide focal points for the mile long boulevard.

Along the parkway is the greatest concentration of scientific, cultural, civic and educational instututions in the city. Several styles of architecture are represented by the cultural institutions on the Parkway, including French at the Rodin Museum, Central Library and the Municipal Court Building (both are facsimilies of twin palaces on the Place de la Concorde in Paris), Roman-Corinthian at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and Greek at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Franklin Institute. The tiny guard house facing the Art Museum is Victorian.

Benjamin Franklin is also commemorated in the Franklin Institute Science Museum by the only national monument to his genius in the country. The Benjamin Franklin Memorial contains a seated statue by the scultptor James Earle Fraser.

Beyond to the west, the lengthy vista of the Parkway culminates in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is this view, with trees, the fountains and their sculpture, that suggests the Philadelphia version of the Avenue des Chmaps-Elysees in Paris.

We hope that you enjoy our photos of Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
