Documenting Kentucky Derby Champion Barbaro's Road to Recovery

by John Fischer
for About.com

We offer this collection of photos of Kentucky Derby Champion racehorse Barbaro following surgery for traumatic injuries he sustained at the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore Maryland on May 20, 2006. These images are courtesy of photographer Sabina Louise Pierce and the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

Barbaro sustained a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint the ankle was dislocated. These injuries were repaired during a six hour surgery performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dean W. Richardson.

For more information about the life-saving work done every day at the New Bolton Center and how you can donate to the Barbaro Fund to help other injured animals check out our feature on the New Bolton Center of the University of PA's School of Veterinary Medicine.
