It was supposed to be a battle between the five-time champion Bill "El Wingador" Simmons and two-time defending champion, Joey Chestnut, but it quickly turned into a rout as Chestnut pulled away from the field in the first 14-minute round by eating 124 wings. Simmons ate 107 leaving him 17 wings behind.

Chestnut extended his lead in round two finishing with 224 wings. His closest competition was fellow IFOCE member and second ranked national eater, Randall Patrick Bertoletti with 211 wings and Simmons in third with 189 wings.

The order didn't change with the final two-minute "wing-off" as Joey Chestnut triumphed for the third consecutive year, finishing with 241 wings. Bertoletti took second with 227 wings. Simmons ended up with a personal best 205 wings, yet still 36 wings behind Chestnut.

Along with the pride of a third consecutive win, Chestnut went home with over $40,000 in prizes with a car, a motorcycle (for winning the first round), and diamond championship ring.
