Walking into Shane's is literally walking back into time. Aside from a brighter paint color than existed in 1876, the architecture of the store remains unchanged. You'll see the original detailed ceiling moldings, punch-bowl lights (now converted to electricity), ornately carved candy counters and shelves and even a cash register dating back to the turn of the century.

The selection of candies is amazingly wide. You'll even find items specifically crafted for the season of the year. A week after Easter, I noted not only the standard Easter bunnies and eggs but also chocolate crosses!

Much like you'd find in earlier days, the store's cat wanders attracting the attention and affection of customers. While you might expect the prices of such fresh candies to be high, the prices are much lower than you'll find for comparative items elsewhere.

Shane's must be doing something right. According to Barry Shane, they have a loyal customer base that combined with visitors purchase over 40,000 pounds of candy each year.

Shanes is located at 110 Market Street in Philadelphia between Front and Second Streets. Their phone number is 215-922-1048.
