The lighthouse is open to the public although hours vary throughout the year. The tower is open daily, April through November, and on weekends most of the rest of the year. The grounds, ground floor, tower and watchroom are open to the public. All yours of the tower are self-guided. People with fear of heights are not advised to climb the tower since the cast iron spiral staircase is somewhat see-through and some visitors may suffer vertigo. The operators are usually kind enough to refund the admission fee to visitors who find that they simply cannot endure the climb.

Over the past 16 years, close to $2 million has been spent in order to allow the public to climb safely to the top and to restore the lighthouse and oil house.
