Best viewed from the top of the lighthouse is the nearby St. Mary's by the Sea, the former Shoreham Hotel. This beautiful and historic Victorian building is used as a summer retreat by the Sisters of St. Joseph. No less than four hotels - Sea Grove House, Cape House, Centennial House and The Shoreham Hotel were built along Beach Avenue in Cape May Point (or just one block away from it) from 1875 to 1890. Only the former Shoreham Hotel remains.
The ocean had washed away virtually the entire beach in front of St. Mary's, leaving the old building vulnerable to storms and the nuns praying for a miracle. The beach and dune reconstruction project has helped protect this historic building, answering the prayers of the sisters who feared for the future of their retreat.
