Make a quick right and walk to the building immediately to your right. This is Congress Hall. Formerly a County Court House, the building served as the first home to the Congress of new United States with the House of Representatives meeting on the first floor hence the common nickname of "the Lower House." The United States Senate met on the second floor, hence it's nickname as "the Upper House."

Both chambers are open to the public and have been restored to their appearance at the end of the 18th century.

It was within these chambers that President George Washington was inaugurated for a second term in 1793, John Adams was inaugurated as the nation's second president, and most significantly, the Bill of Rights was ratified by Congress in 1789. These first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution became law in 1791 following approval by the states.
