In the 1960s, plans for an expressway that would have linked I-95 and I-76 caused property values on South Street to plummet. With rents cheap, artists moved in to the area, including Isaiah Zagar, who has been crafting his beautiful, immediately recognizable mosaics in the area ever since. While Zagar's mosaics can be seen all around South Street, the best place to view them is at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens at 1020 South Street, where we begin our tour. Zagar began working on the multi-lot mosaic garden in 1994. Today, the gardens are open for both guided and self-guided tours. The hours do change with the seasons, so check the garden's website for up-to-date information.
