On July 4, 2005, City of Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street officially honored entertainer Sir Elton John as the recipient of the Philadelphia City of Brotherly Love Award for his humanitarian efforts to improve the plight of those living with HIV/AIDS.

The ceremony was held at Independence Hall as part of the City of Philadelphia's annual Independence Day Ceremony.

in 1991 Elton established the Elton John AIDS Foundation (UK), his pioneering charity dedicated to breakthrough work on behalf of those around the world suffering from HIV and related illnesses. A sister organization with offices in Los Angeles was established in 1992 to fund programs in North America.

To date the two organizations have raised over $67 million which have supported over 300 projects in the UK as well as projects in 55 countries worldwide. In the United States over 2,028 projects have been funded in 95 cities.
